Stereotype Motel feat. Yousef With Huggy and KIPP$. @ Cabaret Voltaire

10.12.2005

Having only been to Cabaret Voltaire once before, I was intrigued to see what this night had to offer. The night didn't start smoothly, arriving at about 11pm, annoyed at potentially missing some decent music, I was informed that they only opened twenty minutes before I got there. Feeling sorry for the people who had arrived at 10pm I entered to find a nearly deserted club. The promoter promised me that it was only because they were running very late that it wasn't buzzing. Not having been convinced by his logic, I descended upon the bar. £3 a pint, £3 vodka coke. Pretty average prices for a Saturday night in Edinburgh , especially when entry is £10 (£8 for members and NUS).

The club isn't big, similar to most of the clubs in Edinburgh it is situated in a basement, with appalling air conditions (not helped by the smoke machines going crazy every couple of minutes) with a main room, a bar area and a smaller second room. There are very few areas for sitting and chatting, to be honest it's not that type of place. The floors are very slippery and most of the club is very dark. The sound system in both rooms is great, really punchy bass and crisp trebles. The funky disco lights are smoothly run and look good.

Huggy's set was flawless. Having done mixes for Pete Tong's essential selection, you'd expect nothing less. The mixes were long and tight. Very deep remix of Dare by The Gorillaz went down very well with the crowd, which was by twelve getting near capacity. This was about as commercial as it got for both Huggy and Yousef. For me this wasn't a problem. However, as the night went on it became obvious that sometimes it got a bit hard for quite a few of the girls in the club as they moved to the second room for some Kipp$ action.

The second room was about 70% girls, I'm guessing due to the slower and slightly more commercial beats. A cool atmosphere, chilled compared to the main room. Kipp$ played some prominent house remixes, with quite a funky edge to them. By the end of the night some Hip-Hop was also being put into the mix.

Yousef (Radio 1), also famous for his own night Circus in Liverpool, which has featured the likes of Danny Rampling, Tim Deluxe, Erick Morillo, and Layo and Bushwacka!, played some really serious house music, not stuff you can find in HMV easily. He brought the serious house lovers out on to the dance floor and the party started kicking off. The atmosphere was fantastic, a happy crowd listening to music they loved. The floor was packed, with Yousef relentlessly dropping class tunes. Some Mylo remixes crept into the mix out of nowhere, nothing I'd heard before. The music was deep, sleazy but funky all the same. Overall some of the best house music I've heard in Edinburgh . Smiles were blossoming all over the dance floor. Serious value for money.
