Hosted at Eden, Judgement Sunday has consistently managed to fill the venue
to capacity throughout the season. Music selection for the night is Trance
in the main room and Funky House for the back room. The line-up’s are
suitably impressive and thanks to the association with Goodgreef, a high quality
selection of guests have been brought in to play to the masses. Main attractions
are residents Judge Jules and Eddie Halliwell, performing in both rooms.
‘Judgement Sunday: San Antonio’s busiest night!’ the flyer
proudly proclaimed. Unfortunately, being San Antonio’s biggest night
does not make it San Antonio’s best. The production was surprisingly
poor considering the popularity of the night and the quality of the DJs. Around
the club, apart from a few randomly placed flyers and the DJ’s set times
on the walls, there was nothing to distinguish Judgement Sunday from any other
night. They had a few entertainers roaming the crowd and the podiums were always
filled by dancers, however the general appearance and atmosphere of the club
was no different from that which you find can find in the bigger clubs of most
UK cities. (In defence, the pool-party at Coastline boasted hoards of banners
and lots of promo material, and the atmosphere served as a great warm-up for
the night to come - we just wonder, why didn’t they make the effort in
Eden? -Ed)
Judgement Sunday is heavily advertised by Club 18-30 and the likes and this
is reflected in the crowd. Designer shirts and slinky dresses were the clubbers’ main
choice and the majority of the crowd seemed to be on the pull. There were a
few dedicated clubbers having it large at the front but the rest of the dance-floor
may as well have been filled with handbags. For anyone who goes out for the
music and the atmosphere, there is very little on offer here. Jules’ commercial
success and features on Radio 1 have gained him recognition and he has attracted
a much broader audience than other nights receive and it’s great for
getting the numbers through the door, however we feel that they have alienated
the true clubbers out there.
Judgement Sunday is unfortunately one of our least favourite nights of the
summer. For a night that is no different to your local Time on a Saturday night
(bar the line-up), the 40 euro admission price seems unjustified and we actually
left early, bored. Unless you’re on the pull (in which case you’ll
love it), we recommend giving this one a wide berth.
